Republican who 'would lynch' elections official casts AZ’s delegate votes for Trump

The state GOP activist who cast Arizona’s roll call votes to nominate former President Donald Trump on Monday at the Republican National Convention recently landed in hot water for saying she “would lynch” a Maricopa County election official.

Shelby Busch, the chair of Arizona's delegation to the Republican National Convention, cast the state’s 43 votes for Trump on Monday at the gathering in Milwaukee. Her appearance at the convention comes just after an assassination attempt against Trump led elected officials on both sides of the aisle to call for "unity" and a lowering of the national political temperature.

Busch faced criticism last month after she was caught on video saying that if Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer was in the room, “I would lynch him.” Busch contrasted Richer, who is Jewish, with a man in the room who she said is a “good Christian man,” according to the video footage.

The Anti-Defamation League and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Phoenix called Busch’s remarks “vile.” Richer, who is also a Republican, shared the video in June and said “this isn't healthy. And it's not responsible. And we shouldn't want it as part of the Republican Party.”

"Recorder Richer unequivocally denounces all violent rhetoric," Richer spokesperson Taylor Kinnerup said Monday in an email.

In her remarks on the convention floor, Busch highlighted the electoral system as she cast Arizona’s votes for Trump. Busch did not immediately respond Monday to a request for comment.

“Arizona needs to secure its southern border to prevent the atrocities that are happening and fix its broken election system,” Busch said. “That’s why I, Shelby Busch, the delegation chair, and our wonderful state chairwoman Gina Swodoba and this entire delegation cast their 43 delegates to Donald J. Trump.”
