LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11) — Hailing it as a victory for women, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman signed a transgender athlete ban into law.

Put simply; it bars transgender athletes from playing at county-owned facilities unless they compete on teams matching the gender they were assigned at birth or coed teams. The controversial ban has had a long road to becoming law and the fight isn’t over yet.

Just moments after it was signed into law, New York Attorney General Leticia James filed suit for a second time against Nassau County.

“Here in New York, every person has the right to be exactly who they are, free from discrimination, and my office will always protect that right,” James said.

The New York Civil Liberties Union also filed their own lawsuit.

    Transgender advocates said it’s discriminatory.
