The Bachelorette ‘s Marcus Shoberg may not have gotten Jenn Tran’s first impression rose on Night 1, but as the first man out of the limo in Season 21, he certainly helped set the tone for Jenn’s journey.

During his intro video, the 31-year-old from Raleigh, North Carolina explained that he’s an Army Ranger Veteran who left for training two weeks after he graduated from high school.

“I did six deployments and I’m super proud to have been an army ranger, but the last mission I ever went on, I almost didn’t come back from,” Shoberg shared. “Me and my team were called on to go clear this compound, and in that exchange, a grenade came in and everything goes black. I woke up in a hospital in Washington, DC…”

The recovery process reportedly took two months and left Shoberg with a fresh view on life. “When you can genuinely appreciate that you woke up in the monring and have breath in your lungs — that’s a beautiful thing, and I would never have been able to appreciate those types of things without that kind of experience,” he said.
