Sen. Tim Scott 's (R-SC) efforts as a buoyant campaign surrogate for former President Donald Trump did not result in a vice presidential reward. Yet the South Carolina senator remained in full support of Trump during the first full night of the Republican National Convention .

Scott spoke Monday during prime-time hours after Trump announced Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) would join the ticket as his running mate. Scott received one of the loudest applause when he appeared onstage.

WHO IS JD VANCE? MEET TRUMP'S PICK FOR VICE PRESIDENT

"The devil came to Pennsylvania holding a rifle, but the American lion got back up on his feet," Scott said, referencing the failed assassination attempt against Trump on Saturday, "and he roared!"

He also received loud approval after he declared that "America is not a racist country."

Delegates told the Washington Examiner they were pleased with Vance as Trump's vice presidential decision, but none had anything negative to say about Scott either.

"I think it's a great pick. I think he'll get along with the president. He understands the needs of the American people," Art Wittich, a Montana delegate, said. "He's super smart, and it'll be a really great change from our current vice president.

Wittich did not criticize Scott, instead saying, "Everybody will benefit by having President Trump elected with a good VP candidate."

"All those other candidates, all those other people that were considered, America will be better, and they will be better too," he added.

"I think that that's one of the great blessings in the Republican Party is the bench was really deep, and they had a lot of wonderful candidates," Chris Miller, an Illinois delegate, said. "And I guess you'd probably have to get inside the war room to find out all the little small details of why they decided to go with J.D. Vance over some of the other great candidates."

In the lead-up to Trump's running mate announcement, Scott had crisscrossed the nation on behalf of Trump, meeting with donors and black male voters and ginning up support for the former president.

Simultaneously, he got engaged to Mindy Noce in January, with the pair expected to wed on Aug. 3 at Seacoast Church near Charleston, South Carolina. Theoretically, Scott could still land a plum promotion if Trump were to win reelection in November, but it remains unclear what position that could be.
