SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) – Happy Monday, Utah! Monsoon moisture rotating around a ridge of high pressure will trickle into Utah this week, keeping a chance of afternoon thunderstorms in the forecast.

Active skies returning to the region today as monsoon moisture continues to rotate through the ridge of high pressure to the east of the state. Isolated showers and thunderstorms remain possible for most areas this afternoon and evening.

Daytime highs will be a little cooler this afternoon thanks to the increasing moisture. Highs will reach the mid-90s for the Wasatch Front and around 105 degrees for lower Washington County.

Storms that form this afternoon will move slowly, raising the risk of isolated flash flooding, especially in prone areas like slot canyons. It’s hard to predict the exact timing of the pop-up showers, but expect storms to start on higher ground and move into nearby valleys. As we’ve seen in the past few days, lower Washington County and Zion National Park might not see much action until late in the afternoon.

Tuesday afternoon and evening will be similar to Monday, with less storms expected to form in northern Utah, focusing more on central and southern Utah. This wash, rinse, and repeat pattern will continue throughout the week with little changes to the overall weather setup through Friday. Expect minimal day-to-day changes in weather, with temperatures around 5 degrees above normal and daily thunderstorms mainly in southern Utah and higher terrain.

As additional moisture moves in from the south on Thursday and Friday, storm chances will increase statewide, potentially raising the flash flood risk. If you’re planning to be recreating in southern Utah around this time, know that slow-moving storms that form in these areas will increase flash flood risks. Always be prepared with the latest forecast before you head out.

As the ridge shifts westward over the weekend, expect drier air in northern areas and slightly higher temperatures. The ridge will likely persist into next week keeping temperatures toasty hot and the pattern mostly dry for now.
