Severe weather risks are shifting this week back to Plains and Midwest while the weather in the Northeast and Mid Atlantic states couldn't be better to start off this holiday week. In the Northern Plains today we have severe thunderstorm and elevated tornado risks for the Dakotas, Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota. The riska area shifts eastward Tuesday and Wednesday in the Middle and Upper Mississippi River Valley from Missouri and Kansas northward into parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Tornado risk will also be elevated.

Good day to everyone; I hope that you had a great week. Looking at our forecast today, one thing concerns me: the high temperatures expected this afternoon. A heat advisory is in effect for southern Louisiana and Mississippi this afternoon. High temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s, with heat index values expected to be as high as 110 degrees Fehernight. Looking at our rainfall chances, I suspect areas along and south of Interstate 20 will have the highest chance of seeing some rainfall this afternoon. Even so, these showers will be spotty in nature, so I would not count on seeing much rain today, even if you reside south of Interstate 20.

The Northeast and Northern Mid Atlantic states continue to enjoy nice dry conditions. Low humidity, sunshine and pleasant temperatures Monday saw temperatures that topped out in the upper 70s to lower 80s. Today we will see temperatures nudge a little higher to a range of 80 to 85 however dew points remain in the low to mid 50s so it will be quite comfortable. Look for lots of sunshine and no showers or thunderstorms are around as the radars remain nice and quiet.

A slow moving frontal boundary will serve as a source for thunderstorms and heavy rain as low pressure develops along the front late today. This front is to the north this morning, stretching across southern Canada back into Michigan. The front will sag southward today, ending up over our region this afternoon.

I walk every day at Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Park Hill. A few days ago, I noticed for the first time what appeared to be exceptionally large hornets, or dragonflies, buzzing between the trees. These beasts can fly up and down or left and right and are extremely fast. They will whiz past your head as you walk past the trees they are buzzing around. They seems to be roosting in the pines.

Sandy Paws Resuce Inc., a foster-based animal rescue in Massachusetts, recently introduced Miracle, a pit bull terrier who is approximately one year old, and is now looking for her forever home. According to the nonprofit rescue organization, “Miracle was dumped at a lake in Texas and rescued by a good samaritan who has been fostering her since.” This compassionate individual provided Miracle with a temporary home and the love she desperately needed. However, her foster parent recognizes that Miracle deserves even more. “While her foster hates to let her go, she knows there is a better life for Miracle in MA,” Sandy Paws Rescue Inc. noted.
