The Paul Skenes show is set for its next stop: The MLB All-Star Game.
Skenes, the 6-foot-8 rookie right-hander, will start the Midsummer Classic for the National League on Tuesday night, just over a year after the Pirates made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft.
In 11 starts this season, Skenes is 6-0 with a 1.90 ERA. He has 89 strikeouts in just 66 1/3 innings, and threw seven no-hit innings in his last start against the Brewers.
When Skenes takes the mound in Arlington on Tuesday night, he will become just the fifth rookie pitcher to start the All-Star Game, joining Hideo Nomo (1995), Fernando Valenzuela (1981), Mark Fidrych (1976), and Dave Stenhouse (1962). Skenes, 22, is the youngest pitcher to earn the nod since Dwight Gooden in 1986.
While we will have to wait a little longer for the American League to reveal a starting lineup, Skenes could very well face the AL East triumvirate of Gunnar Henderson, Juan Soto, and Aaron Judge in the first inning.

First pitch of the 2024 MLB All-Star Game is slated for 8 p.m. ET at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. Joe Davis (play-by-play) and John Smoltz (color analyst) are expected to have the call for FOX.
