Since their introduction in 2021, the Formula 1 Sprint races have transformed the landscape of the world’s foremost racing championship, under the combined auspices of Formula 1 and the FIA. These high-octane, shorter races were designed to amplify spectator engagement and intensify the racing drama, and they’ve succeeded spectacularly on both fronts. By 2025, the Sprint races will celebrate their fifth anniversary, marking half a decade of exhilarating race weekends that have enriched the Formula 1 calendar and broadened its appeal.

The impact of the Sprint format on both racing quality and spectator numbers speaks volumes. High-profile winners like Max Verstappen and George Russell have thrilled audiences with their mastery and dexterity, resulting in significant bumps in viewership. For instance, the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix Sprint witnessed a 40% surge in live audience figures from key global markets compared to previous years, while the Miami Sprint set a new U.S. record with 946,000 viewers tuning in on ESPN. Such statistics underscore the formula’s success, with Sprint Qualifying rounds in Austria drawing 76% more viewers compared to regular practice sessions.

The locations selected for the 2025 Sprint races—São Paulo, Spa, Shanghai, Miami, Austin, and Lusail—reflect a strategic mix of historical and modern circuits, ensuring a global spread that encapsulates the sport’s international appeal. Noteworthy, São Paulo will host for the fifth consecutive year, signaling its popularity and significance in the F1 calendar, while Spa, eagerly anticipated by fans, returns after a two-year break.

Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, praised the Sprint’s impact, elaborating on the array of benefits it has introduced: “The Sprint has been a great success for Formula 1, bringing all our fans more action and racing on the track. We are seeing the proof of this in our audience data, fan attendance on Fridays, and from the promoters and partners. As we prepare to celebrate our 75th anniversary in 2025, we will always honor our incredible history, but we must always be looking ahead, innovating, and improving to deliver the best for our growing forward to those incredible events throughout the season.”

Echoing these sentiments, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA, acknowledged the evolutionary growth of the Sprint events: “As the FIA Formula One World Championship celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2025, the Sprint will also enter its fifth year as part of the competition. Over that time, and through our strong collaboration with Formula 1 and with the input of all the teams, it has been through several different iterations, and the regulations and format have evolved to give us the exciting and popular Sprints we have today. The six events for 2025 once again take in an interesting range of circuits and are sure to provide fans with plenty of additional action across the season.”

The specific dates set for each of the six Sprints in 2025 promise a well-organized tour through these host cities, providing fans ample opportunity to partake in the unique thrill that Sprint races offer. The scheduled races are as follows: Shanghai from March 21-23, Miami from May 2-4, Spa from July 25-27, Austin from October 17-19, São Paulo from November 7-9, and wrapping up the year in Lusail from November 28-30.

As Formula 1 and the FIA continue to iterate on this exciting format, the 2025 season looms as a pivotal year, offering both a nod to the rich history and a forward-looking approach to making motor racing more thrilling and accessible to a wider audience. The Sprint races serve as a catalyst for this evolution, challenging traditional conventions while ensuring the sport remains at the pinnacle of global motorsport entertainment.
