LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders has ordered flags to half-staff to commemorate the death of an Arkansas political stalwart Tommy Robinson.

Sanders ordered flags at half-staff on July 16 to honor former congressman Tommy Robinson. Robinson is due to be interred on that date.

Robinson, who died July 10 at 82 years old, had a long history in Arkansas politics, including being the Pulaski County sheriff, a U.S. House member and service in the Huckabee administration. He famously won his seat in Congress as a Democrat and then switched to the Republican party while still in office.

Robinson later lost in a Republican primary race for governor of Arkansas in 1990.

He was a veteran who served in the Navy.

Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders released a statement on the passing of Robinson calling him “one of the giants of Arkansas politics.”

Bryan and I are mourning the loss of Congressman Robinson, a true legend in Little Rock and our state. Tommy’s career was colorful, but it was colorful in service of the people of Arkansas. He brought much-needed attention to issues like crime and prison overcrowding, and while his methods were sometimes unconventional, they won him admiration from voters to earn a seat in Congress. He was never afraid of a fight.

We are praying for Tommy’s family, friends, and admirers. All of us have lost one of the giants of Arkansas politics.

    GOV. SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS

Robinson’s funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Brinkley Convention Center, 1501 Weatherby Drive, Brinkley 72021.
