Cape League Power Rankings: The Hyannis Harbor Hawks picked up resume building wins

By Allen Gunn, Cape Cod Times,

The top four teams in the Cape Cod Baseball League power rankings have featured in every power ranking this season and, despite a shuffle in position, that is no different for Week 4.

The fifth spot was heavily contested.

Bourne has had a resurgence of late, where the Braves strung together a three-game win streak last week before they lost on Sunday to the Cotuit Kettleers. The Brewster Whitecaps have also started to kick into gear with the playoffs approaching behind the bats of Arkansas’ Ryder Helfrick, who is arguably the best hitter in the league, and Miami’s Daniel Cuvet. Last week, the Chatham Anglers ascended to fifth and had another strong showing, but they will have to adapt Austin Overn being drafted 97th overall in this year’s Major League Baseball Draft.

All three teams made a case for the best team outside of the heavy hitters — Cotuit, Hyannis, Wareham and Yarmouth-Dennis, but who was the last team to lock up a spot in latest power rankings?

    Records as of Monday morning.

    1. Hyannis Harbor Hawks (14-9-1)

The Harbor Hawks continue to pick up resume building wins. They trounced the Cotuit Kettleers 14-4 in just seven innings on Thursday before a one-run win over the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox to close the week out with a 4-1 record. The Harbor Hawks’ lone loss came to the Bourne Braves, which had been making a claim to break into the power rankings. Dallas Baptist’s Michael Dattalo (24 hits, 17 RBIs), Niagara’s Nick Groves (23 hits, 14 RBIs, 17 runs, 12 walks, .365 batting average) and Liberty’s Kane Kepley (20 hits, 22 runs, 13 RBIs, 14 stolen bases) have carried Hyannis’ offense following the departure of Jon Jon Gazdar. The Harbor Hawks boast the league’s best offense with a +33-run differential and 147 runs scored. Aaron Savary (Iowa) and Blaine Wynk (Ohio State) have been solid arms. The addition of Jason Reitz (Oregon), who was released by the Red Sox, has paid dividends. Reitz has a 1.54 ERA in 11 2/3 innings across three games, including two starts.

    2. Wareham Gatemen (16-8-1)

The Gatemen have had to be in playoff mode to hold onto the top spot in the West Division, which is a gauntlet—four of the top five offenses in the league reside in the West. Wareham went 3-3 across the week that included an out of character shutout performance against the Brewster Whitecaps, but the Gatemen have been the team to beat this summer. They give themselves a chance to win in every game with their ability to extend innings and get extra at bats. The Gatemen lead the league in at bats (835), hits (226), batting average (.271) and slugging (.442). Triston Gray (Fresno State) has been crucial for Wareham’s success with 30 hits, 18 RBIs, 14 runs scored and a .345 batting average. Arizona’s Brendan Summerhill has contributed 13 RBIs, 21 hits and 17 runs in 19 games. The pitching staff is led by Arkansas’ Tate McGuire (2.25 ERA) and Mississippi State’s Gavin Black (1.80 ERA), who have allowed just seven earned runs in 31 innings between them.

    3. Cotuit Kettleers (15-9)

The Kettleers responded to their heavy defeat at Hyannis with back-to-back wins, which included ending the Braves three-game win streak. They collected a 7-6 victory over the Gatemen on Wednesday, but are still looking up from second place. Eight players have recorded at least 10 hits, led by California’s Jarren Advincula. He is tied with Wareham’s Triston Gray for first in the league with 30 hits, ranks second in batting average (.395) and third in runs scored (23). Tanner Thach (UNC Wilmington) has 17 hits, 16 RBIs and leads the Kettleers with six home runs. Michael Ebner (Southern California) has posted a 3-0 record on the mound and has allowed just four earned runs in 14 innings.

    4. Y-D Red Sox (15-8-1)

The Red Sox dropped back-to-back games — lost at home to the Orleans Firebirds and at the Harbor Hawks — for the first time this season and went 2-2-1 across their last five games. That didn’t bode well for their fortunes in the power rankings. Wehiwa Aloy (Arkansas) has eight home runs, 25 hits, 24 RBIs, 16 runs scored and is hitting .309 to lead the Red Sox’s offense. Easton Carmichael (Oklahoma) has provided 24 hits, 16 RBIs and 15 runs scored. Seven players have reached double figures in hits for the league’s second best offense. Kennesaw State’s Braden Osbolt has been the best starting pitcher for the team and has posted a 0.44 ERA in four starts and 20 2/3 innings pitched. Aiven Cabral (Northeastern) has a 4-1 record and has allowed just five earned runs in 12 2/3 innings. The Red Sox will need to bounce back from defeats to Orleans and Hyannis in order to climb back up in the rankings.

    5. Chatham Anglers (13-11)

The Anglers are the hottest team on the Cape and have ascended to second in the East Division standings. They’ve won three straight, all against teams below .500, but hold firm at No. 5 as they failed to beat either Wareham or Yarmouth-Dennis to start the week to bolster their resume. Auburn’s Ike Irish (25 hits and 16 runs) will have to take over the mantle from Southern California’s Austin Overn. Aiva Arquette (Washington) has contributed 23 hits and 16 RBIs, while hitting .299, which is best on the team following Overn’s departure. Tyler Kozera (Southern Florida) has given up seven earned runs in 16 2/3 innings with a 3.78 ERA. The Anglers are the second best defensive team in the league with a 3.99 ERA. With the likes of Bourne and Brewster hot on their tails, the Anglers have plenty to play for this week.
