Liverpool owner Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has walked away from a potential deal to take over the French side Bordeaux . Looking to move towards a multi-club model, the U.S. group had been in talks with the Ligue 2 outfit.

But now a press release from Bordeaux has confirmed that exploratory talks between FSG and the six-time French champion are over. Liverpool's ownership group will instead look elsewhere as it seeks to expand its portfolio.

"FC Girondins de Bordeaux and its shareholder have been informed by Fenway Sports Group of its desire not to pursue discussions initiated in recent weeks with a view to purchasing the club," a statement read. "This decision is explained in particular by the significant cost of the stadium in the years to come, but also by the general economic context of French football.

"FC Girondins de Bordeaux and Gérard Lopez thank Fenway Sports Group for the interest shown in the club as well as its teams for traveling to meet its stakeholders. The Club and its shareholder are now putting all their energy into finalizing a financing plan for the 2024/2025 season with a view to the appeal hearing."

Liverpool.com says: While a move to capture Bordeaux appeared to make sense, the reasons for moving away from a possible agreement also add up. It will be interesting to see where FSG turns next as it looks to buy another soccer team.

The benefits of doing such a thing are clear but it has to be the right move for it to work. Michael Edwards and Julian Ward will both be involved when a new team has been sorted out, with the latter having been part of the talks in this instance.
