Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher delivers Jurgen Klopp truth bomb amid England links

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher does not think the FA should appoint Jurgen Klopp in the event Gareth Southgate steps down from the England job.

The Three Lions suffered yet more tournament heartbreak last weekend, this time at the hands of Spain who defeated England 2-1 to claim Euro 2024 glory. Goals from Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzabal either side of Cole Palmer's second half equalizer saw England fall in Berlin, making it two major final defeats in two for Southgate.

In the immediate aftermath of the defeat, the England boss told the media: "Now is not the time for me to speak about that [his future]. I need to talk to the right people and give myself a bit of time."

However, the reality of the situation is speculation around Southgate's future is only growing. Graham Potter, out of work since he was sacked by Chelsea in April 2023, is in the frame. Newcastle United's Eddie Howe has also been linked to the job.

They are the two outstanding English candidates, while Lee Carsley, the England U21s coach who masterminded the 2023 U21 European Championships success out in Georgia, could also be in the frame.

The biggest name who is out of work right now however is former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who recently turned down the USA job , re-emphasizing his commitment to taking a sabbatical from football.

And while a host of England fans would love to see the German take up the reins from Southgate, ex-Reds defender Carragher reckons the job must go to an Englishman.

"What manager out there is looking at England and thinking how can I better what Gareth Southgate has done?" Carragher replied when speaking to Sky Sports about the Three Lions job.

"You have got to win the World Cup. We aren’t a team who wins trophies, we aren’t Brazil or Germany, who have a history of winning trophies for years and years. Yes, we want to change that. But I can’t see too many managers licking their lips thinking I’m going to take this on from Gareth Southgate. There’s not much room to improve.

“I have seen Jurgen Klopp mentioned because he’s out of a job and we love him but number one, England shouldn’t be having a foreign manager. We have been down that road and the two managers we have had did absolutely nothing for England in those tournaments.

“And we keep being obsessed by these great managers at international level, I can guarantee you most people in England have never heard of the Spanish manager before this tournament. Top managers are in the Champions League , because that’s where they want to be. International football for me is about the players.”
