Germany is adopting the rule that only team captains can talk to referees at all levels of football with immediate effect.

The captain-only rule was rated highly successful at Euro 2024, and will also be used in future European cup matches by UEFA.

The German Football Federation (DFB) said on Tuesday it has agreed with its refereeing body and the German Football League (DFL) to introduce it from the Bundesliga to the lowest amateur divisions.

Other players trying to argue with a referee face being booked, and apart from improving player conduct the rule is also to benefit the net playing time of matches.

"The introduction is not only sensible and practical, it also helps football right down to the grassroots level," DFB referee instructor Lutz Wagner said.

"It is also very easy to implement, as it doesn't require any changes to the rules, just a clear definition of the communication process between the referee and the captain.

"There will also be a short and concise information sheet for everyone involved so that everyone is on the same page."
