Jurgen Klopp stance on England job as Gareth Southgate steps down after Euro 2024

England is on the hunt for a new manager after Gareth Southgate stepped down from his post just two days after the Three Lions defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final .

Goals from Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzabal either side of Cole Palmer's equalizer saw England fall in Berlin as Spain claimed European Championship glory. Luis de la Fuente's side was the best team in the tournament having beaten the two finalists at Euro 2020 in Italy and England, the two best European performers at the 2022 World Cup in France and Croatia, and the Euro 2024 tournament hosts Germany.

And now following the defeat to Spain, Southgate has stepped down as England boss, stating: "It’s time for change, and for a new chapter." A host of names have been linked with the job following Southgate's departure, with Graham Potter and Eddie Howe the two leading English managers who could take up the reins.

However, one individual who almost certainly won't be available to take over from Southgate is former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp , who last week turned down the chance to manage the USA just two years away from the 2026 World Cup they are set to host.

The USMNT's disastrous Copa America campaign, which saw them crash out in the group stages, led to the sacking of Gregg Berhalter, with Klopp linked to the role. The German was offered the job, but he rejected advances from the US.

While the England job could be tempting to Klopp, it would seem highly unlikely the FA would be able to convince the former Liverpool boss to become the next Three Lions boss. Announcing his decision to step down as Liverpool manager in January, Klopp cited burnout.

So the suggestion he could be open to taking up a role of such intensity just eight months after he sighted burnout, and just two after he left Anfield officially, seems laughable. There is no doubt that Jurgen Klopp is one of the best managers in the world and if England ever managed to convince him to become their manager, it would represent a real coup.

But the chances of that happening are slim to none. With the 2026 World Cup now two years away, who's to say Germany boss Julian Naglesmann isn't tempted away to club management before that tournament? Klopp might fancy taking that job instead.

He could also wait until the tournament, which is being held in the USA, Canada and Mexico, is over. Naglesmann might leave his post after that, opening the door for Klopp.
