ROANOKE, Va. ( WFXR ) — It will be another hot and humid day in Southwest and Central Virginia. Near-record heat is possible on Tuesday. However, a “cool down” is slated for the latter half of the week.

Heat Advisories will go into effect on Tuesday for portions of Central Virginia and Southside, as well as Highland and Nelson counties. It will feel like 105-110 degrees during the afternoon when factoring temperatures and humidity together.

Tuesday will start with morning temperatures in the 60s and 70s. Expect temperatures to rise into the 90s during the afternoon under mostly to partly sunny skies. A few spots along and east of the Blue Ridge could hit the 100-degree mark. Due to the heat and humidity, a few isolated showers and storms may pop up during the afternoon and evening.

When dealing with hot weather, here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

    • If you plan on working or exercising outside, try to do so during the morning or evening when temperatures aren’t as hot
    • Take frequent breaks when working outside
    • Drink plenty of water
    • Stay in the shade when you can
    • Consider wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothes

A cold front will approach Southwest and Central Virginia for the middle of the week. It will still be hot and humid on Wednesday, but temperatures will be a few degrees cooler. Scattered showers and storms will have the chance to pass through, especially during the afternoon and evening. Due to the moist air in place, downpours may occur. Stronger storms may produce gusty winds, so stay weather-aware.

For Thursday, scattered showers and storms will remain in the forecast as the front stalls nearby. It will be cooler for the latter half of the week. Starting Thursday and continuing through the weekend, highs will be in the 70s and 80s. Morning lows will be in the 60s.
