Jurgen Klopp odds to become next England manager after Gareth Southgate exit

    By Tom Malley,

Gareth Southgate has stepped down from his role as England manager after more than eight years in charge following the Three Lions' heartbreaking Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain less than 48 hours ago.

The 53-year-old was cruelly denied England's first piece of silverware since 1966 once more after La Roja secured a late 2-1 victory in Berlin, having suffered the same fate in the delayed Euro 2020 final three years ago.

After two finals, one semi-final and one quarter-final at the last four major tournaments, Southgate has made the decision to step down . Naturally, all the unemployed managers are already being linked with the job - including former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp .

The German only departed Anfield two months ago and has been adamant that he wants a year off from football, having already turned down the vacant USMNT head coach role . But with a bigger project on the table in the form of the England job, could he be tempted?

According to odds provided by BetMGM , Klopp is currently 20/1 to become the next England manager.

That places him joint-bottom of the current list, alongside Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, and it's no real surprise considering it will take a major swing to convince the German to make such a quick return to management, even if it is international football.

While the England job could be tempting to Klopp, it would seem highly unlikely the FA would be able to convince the former Liverpool boss to become the next Three Lions boss . Announcing his decision to step down as Liverpool manager in January, Klopp cited burnout.

Also at 20/1 to become the next England manager is Steve Cooper, who has recently taken over at Premier League new boys Leicester City, and Middlesbrough head coach Michael Carrick.

Former Chelsea managers Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino come in at 10/1 and 5/1, respectively, while the top three odds for next England boss are for Graham Potter (5/4), Eddie Howe (4/1) and Lee Carsley (9/2).

It would be no surprise to see England U21 coach Carsley make the step up, at least on an interim basis, while the FA search for their next man, especially with the next international break only seven weeks away.

As for Howe and Potter, they have been touted as the two best English managers outside of Southgate in recent years and the most likely to take over. Potter enjoyed great success with Brighton prior to his short-lived stint with Chelsea, while Howe has worked wonders at both Bournemouth and Newcastle, of which he is still at the latter.

    Next England manager odds

    • Graham Potter – 5/4
    • Eddie Howe – 4/1
    • Lee Carsley – 9/2
    • Mauricio Pochettino – 5/1
    • Thomas Tuchel – 10/1
    • Michael Carrick – 20/1
    • Steve Cooper – 20/1
    • Pep Guardiola – 20/1
    • Jurgen Klopp – 20/1
