Tuesday, July 16: Rare July cold front… Hello 80s!

    By Tom Schmidt,

It was a hot Monday with temperatures in the mid-90s and heat indices in the triple digits! We won’t be as hot today but the mugginess will still cling on this afternoon. Expect highs in the upper 80s towards central Missouri and low to mid-90s in southern Missouri and northern Arkansas.

Popup showers are possible this morning through the afternoon but better rain chances arrive this evening into tonight as a boundary nears. Some storms this evening and tonight could become strong to severe able to produce 60 mph wind gusts. Repeated rounds of rain and storms may lead to locally heavy rain of 3-5″.

Rain and thunder will spill into Wednesday with the emphasis for wet weather gradually shifting south into Arkansas with the cold front. Temperatures will be noticeably cooler, but humid conditions won’t retreat until Thursday.

The great news is that the cold front will open the door for well below-normal temperatures to invade and stay through the coming weekend! Thursday and Friday will offer up ideal July weather.

Weekend weather will start nice, but take a turn for the cloudier and wetter on Sunday as a storm dives into the middle of the country. The storm will boost rain chances and keep temperatures mild. In fact, it looks like the trough in the middle of the country will persist. This may keep rain chances around next week, but it will certainly keep temperatures milder than normal as we kick off the Ozark Empire Fair.
