Rory McIlroy is eyeing an Olympic win with Ireland - a tournament his rival Bryson DeChambeau was excluded from due to his LIV Golf status.

The 2024 U.S. Open champion from America was overlooked by Team USA, who opted for an all-PGA Tour lineup led by Scottie Scheffler. Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark, and Collin Morikawa were also chosen to represent their country in Paris this summer.

DeChambeau 's omission was widely criticized after his major victory, but his performances in LIV Golf have been less than impressive. The 30-year-old voiced his disappointment at not being selected for the Olympics.

His 2024 U.S. Open competitor McIlroy will be heading to the Paris Games to represent Ireland. McIlroy, a four-time major winner, is weathering a harsh decade-long dry spell.

His putting was what ultimately failed him at Pinehurst, losing a two-shot lead to DeChambeau. The 35-year-old is now targeting Olympic success for his cherished country. McIlroy narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in Japan three years ago.

He was part of a thrilling seven-way play-off for the bronze medal at Kasumigaseki Country Club. McIlroy was eliminated on the third extra hole after scoring a final-round 67 to finish 15 under alongside Paul Casey, Hideki Matsuyama, Collin Morikawa, Mito Pereira, Sebastian Munoz and CT Pan.

"It would be incredibly special for me as an individual to have a gold medal," McIlroy confessed to the Belfast Telegraph. "I would be unbelievably proud to get any medal in Paris. A gold medal would be one of the proudest moments of my career."

However, McIlroy has admitted that he had some initial resentment towards the Olympics. "I had a sense of resentment towards the Olympics because I had always tried to stay so neutral and it presented me with this option of, what are you going to do? " McIlroy explained.

"I had to get over that. All of my amateur career I played for Ireland. I was very proud to play for Ireland. So why would I do anything differently as a professional? Tokyo felt like a throwback to the amateur days. All the federations were there."

"Seeing people from the amateur game who I hadn't seen for decades. I really enjoyed the experience and I'm sure Paris will be even better because I'll get to go to some of the other events. It's a bit like the Ryder Cup, I made comments before I had experienced it. I am excited to go back."
