Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) repeated her warning Tuesday that former President Donald Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance (R-OH), will help him “illegally seize power.”

On Monday evening, Trump announced Vance as his campaign partner.

Taking to X in reaction, Cheney wrote: “Vance has pledged he would do what Mike Pence wouldn’t – overturn an election and illegally seize power. He says the president can ignore the rulings of our courts. He would capitulate to Russia and sacrifice the freedom of our allies in Ukraine.”

In a further indictment of the Republican Party, she added: “The Trump GOP is no longer the party of Lincoln, Reagan or the Constitution.”

The former senior Republican sub-tweeted similar remarks she made in February about Vance, when he was merely rumored to be on Trump’s list of potential running mates.

Cheney was reacting to Vance’s response to questions by ABC News journalist George Stephanopoulos whether he would have certified the 2020 election results as vice president, per the Constitution as Trump’s then-Vice President Mike Pence did.

Blasting the question as “ridiculous”, Vance continued: “If I had been vice president, I would have told the states, like Pennsylvania, Georgia and so many others, that we needed to have multiple slates of electors and I think the U.S. Congress should have fought over it from there. That is the legitimate way to deal with an election that a lot of folks, including me, think had a lot of problems in 2020. I think that’s what we should have done.”

Notably, the Constitution does not allow for this. No confirmed evidence of widespread fraud in the 2020 election has been found, and local officials nationwide, including many Republicans, have affirmed the results.

At that time, Cheney first accused Vance of helping the former president “illegally seize power” and wrote on X: “Neither Trump nor Vance is fit to serve.”
