A heat advisory remains in effect 11 a.m. Tuesday to 8 p.m. this evening, according to an "urgent" alert issued at 4:11 a.m. from the National Weather Service.

Heat index values up to 104 degrees are expected in the valleys, including central and eastern Augusta, Rockingham and Highland counties and cities of Staunton, Waynesboro and Stuarts Draft.

Impacts: Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur. Very warm and humid conditions will persist into the overnight hours, adding heat stress to those without air conditioning. Ensure to stay hydrated and find ways to stay cool.

Additional precautions from the National Weather Service include: Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency. Call 911.

Cooler temperatures are expected to arrive on Thursday and last through the weekend, according to AccuWeather meteorologist Tom Kines. Read more about what to expect here.
