    Waypoint raises its flag

The Waypoint Veterans Transition Center hosted its official flag-raising ceremony on Sunday. While the center has been open and services began in April, the flag-raising ceremony served as a ceremonial opening for Waypoint. Veterans and active duty members of the military filled the seats on the Hamilton Road location’s porch.

There were speeches given on the history of the flag, the impact of military services, and a rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. However, the main event was the raising of the American flag to a crowd of saluting veterans. Flaying below was the black POW/MIA flag representing those soldiers missing in action.

Waypoint provides holistic assistance to veterans, ranging from housing and employment resources to legal and financial counseling.

CEO of DSP II (Discovering Soldiers Potential II – Waypoint), Sandra Brownlee, was given a certificate of commendation from the Sons of the American Revolution, in “recognition of exemplary courageous patriotism in the display of the flag of the United States of America.”

“There are so many military organizations here today representing, which shows me that we’re doing what we’re supposed to do,” Brownless began. “I will tell you that just this month…we enrolled 56 veterans into the VA system this month alone, that it’s fantastic.”

Waypoint’s goal is to provide services to both veterans and military families.

“We are going to eliminate those suicide numbers in those homeless numbers…and show folks exactly what our intentions were for serving this country or protecting this country,” Brownless said.
