The Academy Award-nominated director reunites with his “United States vs. Billie Holiday” star Andra Day for Netflix film “The Deliverance.” Written by David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum, “The Deliverance” centers on a single mother (Day) who endures strange occurrences in a new home. The feature is billed as being a “genre-defying take on darkness, possession, and finding a higher power.”
The official synopsis reads: “Ebony Jackson, a struggling single mother fighting her personal demons, moves her family into a new home for a fresh start. But when strange occurrences inside the home raise the suspicions of Child Protective Services and threaten to tear the family apart, Ebony soon finds herself locked in a battle for her life and the souls of her children.”
Glenn Close, Daniels’ “Precious” Oscar winner Mo’Nique, Anthony B. Jenkins, Miss Lawrence, Demi Singleton, and Tasha Smith co-star, along with Omar Epps, Caleb McLaughlin, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.
“The Deliverance” is produced by director Daniels, Tucker Tooley, Pamela Oas Williams, Jackson Nguyen, and Todd Crites, with Jahil Fisher, Simone Sheffield, and Jeremy Green co-producing. The executive producers are Jackie Shenoo, Hilary Shor, Greg Renker, and Gregoire Gensollen.
“The Deliverance” is Daniels’ first feature since 2021’s “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” which followed “The Butler” from 2013. Daniels’ other credits include his Best Picture and Best Director Academy Award-nominated film “Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire,” and as the co-creator, executive producer, director, and writer of the Fox series “Empire.”
“I don’t know how he gets Wolverine from ‘Precious,’ but I love him, and he’s a friend to this day,” Daniels told Collider . James Mangold later directed the franchise installment instead. Meanwhile, Jackman is reprising the role for “Deadpool & Wolverine” alongside Ryan Reynolds; “Stranger Things” EP and helmer Shawn Levy directs.
“The Deliverance” premieres in select theaters August 16 and on Netflix August 30. Check out the trailer below.
