Donald Trump's recently-announced running mate once called the former president "America's Hitler" and a "total fraud."

On Monday (July 15), Trump announced his running mate would be Ohio Senator J.D. Vance , who is now a loyal ally but was once a staunch critic of the former president.

“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, per the Associated Press .

The announcement came as the Republican Nation Convention kicked off in Milwaukee. Vance received his formal nomination by the Republican party at the convention. He also joined Trump in the former president's box during the RNC's opening night program.

Vance garnered the nation's attention in 2016 with the publication of his memoir, "Hillbilly Elegy." At that time, Trump also made a meteoric and unlikely rise from reality TV star to president. Varner was an early critic of Trump's political career, calling him “a total fraud,” “a moral disaster” and “America’s Hitler.”

However, Vance changed his tune and became one of the former president's biggest supporters.

“I was certainly skeptical of Donald Trump in 2016, but President Trump was a great president and he changed my mind,” Vance said in an interview. “I think he changed the minds of a lot of Americans because again he delivered that peace and prosperity.”
