Liverpool owners pull out of deal for French club Bordeaux

Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have pulled out of a deal to purchase Ligue 2 side Bordeaux, after failing to reach an agreement for the stricken French club.

Early discussions had taken place between FSG and Bordeaux representatives, with the financially troubled club seeking to avoid being demoted to the Championnat National, the third tier of French football, for the upcoming season if they are unable to produce evidence of a feasible budget within the next two weeks.

Financial burdens associated with the club's 42,115-seater Matmut Atlantique Stadium —owned by Bordeaux's city council through a public/private partnership and currently operating at a loss — have left the French club battling for financial survival, and a potential purchase for around €40 million was being considered.

However, coupled with broader economic concerns in French football — including uncertainties over the value of the next broadcast deal — a decision has been made to terminate the negotiations.

The statement from FSG confirmed: "Following extensive and constructive discussions with all stakeholders, Fenway Sports Group has made the decision not to pursue the acquisition of FC Girondins de Bordeaux.

"We would like to express our gratitude to the chairman and members of the DNCG for giving us the opportunity to meet with them, and thank all of our interlocutors, within FC Girondins de Bordeaux and beyond, for their collaboration over the past weeks as we sought a solution. Despite our disappointment at not being able to find a viable outcome, we wish the club and its supporters the best possible future."

The breakdown in negotiations leaves Bordeaux in a serious trouble, as they look to appeal their provisional relegation next week and retake their place in Ligue 2 ahead of the upcoming season.

It's worth noting that the Ligue 2 team is far from being a minor player in French football.

The club enjoys a substantial, devoted fan base, a rich history, and a strong reputation for nurturing young talent. However, since entering administration in 2021, the club has been in dire need of financial investment.
