Eighteen months after the sale of adult-use cannabis became legal, Connecticut marijuana sales remain lower than Massachusetts but above Rhode Island.

The average price per gram of cannabis is also cheaper in Massachusetts than in Connecticut. The average price per gram of cannabis in Connecticut peaked in March, at $12.51 per gram. During June, it averaged $12.6 per gram, down from an average price of $12.32 per gram when recreational cannabis first became legal to purchase in January 2023.

In Massachusetts, where the retail sale of cannabis has been legal since 2020, the average price per gram is significantly lower. In June, it cost an average of just $5.06 per gram. In March, the average price per gram was $6.63 and in January 2023, it was $7.11.

Massachusetts’ monthly marijuana sales also outpace Connecticut’s. In June, Massachusetts retailers sold $137 million worth of adult-use cannabis products. Connecticut retailers sold roughly $16.3 million. In December 2023, when retail sales peaked, retailers posted roughly $17.2 million in sales. Massachusetts retailers did $140 million in sales the same month.

Rhode Island retailers sold $7.65 million worth of adult-use cannabis in June 2023. In December 2023, the state recorded $10.2 million in adult-use sales. The sale of medical marijuana in Connecticut also outpaces Rhode Island. In June, which saw the lowest amount of medical-use sales to date, Connecticut posted roughly $7.7 million in marijuana sales. During the same month, Rhode Island saw just over $2 million in sales.

In all three states, cannabis buds or flowers are overwhelmingly the most popular product sold and account for a majority of sales.

    Other CT Use Statistics

The total number of retail sales of adult-use cannabis peaked in December 2024, with just under 454,000 products sold. In June, there were just under 419,000 products sold.

The average price of adult-use cannabis products also continues to decline. In January 2023, the average price was roughly $44.60, with roughly 114,5000 products sold. In June, the average price of adult-use products was roughly $38.60.

Through June, there have been 418,899 products sold.

Usable cannabis remains the most popular cannabis product by far. In June, usable cannabis flowers accounted for roughly 47 percent of retail marijuana sales. Since January 2023, they account for roughly 50 percent. Vape cartridges are the second most popular product, accounting for 34 percent of sales in June and 31 percent of sales since January 2023.

Medical marijuana has seen a more steady decline in the monthly number of sales, though the average price per product has remained steadier than the average price per product for adult-use cannabis.

Monthly marijuana sales peaked in March 2023, at roughly $12.6 million dollars. June saw roughly $7.5 million in medical marijuana sales. The total number of medical products sold also peaked during March 2023, with roughly 339,000 products sold. In June, that number stood at roughly 219,000.

The average price per product has remained relatively stable. In January 2023, the average medical product price was $35.68. In June, it was $35.03.

Both adult-use and medical marijuana sales saw a spike in sales in December 2023 and a decline through February 2024. The average price per gram of cannabis also climbed during that time period.

Since then, month-to-month statistics have been mixed, though the number of both medical- and adult-use cannabis products has declined between May and June.
