A fire chief in Delaware County has stood down after a "grossly inappropriate" post about the attempted assassination of Donald Trump .

James Simmonds made a social post about the attempt on the former president's life , expressing approval for what happened, the Borough of Prospect Park said. This is one of many such incidents in the wake of the shocking incident .

The post is no longer live but has been screenshotted and is being widely circulated online. The post allegedly suggested that the shooter should have been more accurate, according to Philadelphia Magazine .

"[Simmonds'] post and comments were grossly inappropriate , expressing approval of the violent attempt on former President Trump’s life. Borough Council spoke with Fire Marshal Simmonds... expressing disdain and extreme concern that such a grossly inappropriate comment was not representative of the Borough government nor of its citizens.

"After a brief time considering his comment, Mr. Simmonds reached the conclusion that his comment was inappropriate and that the best course of action was to resign his position... The Borough leadership agrees.

Until this situation, Simmonds provided dedicated service... however, grossly inappropriate language condoning political violence, which violates the oath every public official takes to uphold the Constitution and laws of our country, our state and our borough, forfeits the confidence of our public that such official may continue to serve."

Simmonds served as both the Prospect Park fire chief and marshal. The Prospect Park Fire Company Board of Trustees said it was deeply saddened to see his comments and does not condone his behavior .

“The Prospect Park Fire Company Board of Trustees met the evening of July 14 stemming from an incident where ill-mannered remarks were made on social media by former Chief James Simmonds regarding the tragic events… in western Pennsylvania ,” a statement posted to Facebook by the Prospect Park Fire Company read.

“We are deeply saddened by Chief Simmonds comments and agreed that it would be best if he stepped down in his role as Chief,” Chairman Joe Magee said.
