Darwin Nunez finally speaks out as Liverpool player faces ban following Copa America brawl

Liverpool's Darwin Nunez has broken his silence on the heartache of missing out on the Copa America final, but steered clear of addressing the chaotic scenes that unfolded post-match.

The Uruguayan striker was caught up in a violent clash with fans after his team's 1-0 semi-final defeat to Colombia. The match, which took place last week in North Carolina, ended in pandemonium as supporters brawled in the stands.

Nunez , along with other Uruguay player s, leapt into the fray to protect their families from invading Colombian fans. Uruguay's head coach Marcelo Bielsa didn't hold back in a blistering critique of US Soccer, CONMEBOL, and the tournament organizers during a heated press conference.

Caught on camera scaling the barriers and seemingly lashing out at Colombian fans, Nunez also tossed a chair amidst the chaos before being seen comforting his son on the pitch . As CONMEBOL launches an inquiry into the fracas, Nunez took a moment to reflect on his Copa America journey, sharing on social media: "My first Copa America. Sad for not having made it to the final, happy for what we experienced, what we learned and what we shared. This continues, let's go Uruguay always!"

After being sidelined due to injury during the 2021 Copa America, Nunez made a triumphant return, starting in all six games for Uruguay and scoring in victories over Panama and Bolivia during the group stages. Following a brief hiatus, Nunez is set to join forces with new manager Arne Slot for Liverpool's preseason.

Nunez isn't the first player to find himself in hot water after an altercation with fans. Eric Dier faced a similar predicament in March 2020 when he confronted a fan following an FA Cup match between Tottenham Hotspur and Norwich City. The incident resulted in a four-match ban and a £40,000 fine for the now-Bayern Munich defender.

Given that the incident took place in South America, Liverpool is hoping that FIFA will not intervene, as this could result in a unilateral ban for Nunez, causing him to miss matches for the Reds next season. In a similar vein, back in 2014, Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez was banned from all football-related activities for four months after biting Italian central defender Giorgio Chiellini during the World Cup.

Liverpool is gearing up to return to the USA this summer for a preseason tour, where they'll face off against Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester United.
