A teenage boy has been shot in south-east London with detectives saying it was “sheer luck” he was not killed.

The 15-year-old was found with gunshot wounds on Sumner Road, Peckham , just before 11.15pm on Monday.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene and is now being treated in hospital for injuries considered not to be life threatening. An air ambulance was scrambled to the scene along with armed officers.

Police are trawling the area for CCTV and forensics officers and search teams have been scouring for bullet casings.

    No arrests have been made.

Detective Inspector Ray Sekalongo, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said: “It is sheer luck that this is not a murder investigation and I am very keen to hear from anyone who has information or footage relating to this incident.

“Removing guns from our streets is a priority for the Met. The injuries caused by guns are often devastating and the effects of being a victim of gun crime linger far beyond the healing of wounds.

“This was an attempt on the life of a 15-year-old boy and I know that there are people who can name the person responsible. Please help us remove guns from your streets by sharing what you know.”

A Met statement said: “ Officers, LAS and London’s Air Ambulance attended. At the scene a 15-year-old boy was found with gunshot injuries. He was taken by LAS to a south London hospital where his condition is not life-threatening.”

Officers from the Trident, the Met’s gun and gang crime unit, are leading the investigation.

At this early stage there has been no arrest.

Anyone with information or footage is asked tocall police on 101 or post on X @MetCC quoting reference CAD 9057/15Jul. To remain anonymous call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
