This is the treacherous ravine where tragic Jay Slater’s body is believed to have been found .

Barely a mile from where his phone last pinged a nearby mobile phone tower, the surrounding areas is deemed a rugged and dangerous place to hike. Dwarfed by gigantic rocky peaks either side of the valley, it has an inviting view of the sea and it is something locals believe may have tempted 19-year-old Jay , who told he friend he was badly lost, to walk towards.

When The Mirror attempted to retrace Jay’s steps from the Airbnb he was visiting in the nearby hamlet of Masca , it took us more than an hour to just get to the edge of the ravine. Rocky and hard-going underfoot it was a strenuous hike and all too easy to see how a young man, disoriented and far from home, could easily get into trouble.

And dramatic footage released by the Guardia Civil on Tenerife this morning demonstrated just how difficult the terrain is to search. It was taken by the specialist mountain rescue teams that found Jay’s body showed them having to winch men out of the area by helicopter such is the tough nature of the barren landscape.

The large-scale police search in the mountains near Masca had been suspended around two weeks after he disappeared on June 17, but mountain rescue police specialists had continued with a more discreet smaller search on a daily basis.

And a post-mortem today confirmed the body is that of the apprentice bricklayer, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire. The tragic discovery was made near the village of Masca on Monday morning by the mountain rescue division of the Civil Guard. The Spanish police force said that all evidence pointed towards it being Jay , and that he'd died accidentally after suffering a fall.

A court spokesperson in Tenerife confirmed on Tuesday that fingerprints confirmed the body was missing Jay. The injuries suggested he had fallen from a cliff, they added. It also emerged the body was found close to where his phone last pinged on Monday, June 17, alongside his clothes and personal belongings. Jay , 19, vanished while on his first holiday with friends for a three-day music festival, the NRG Tenerife Weekender.
