Two British citizens have been found dead in a burned-out car in Sweden where detectives have launched a murder inquiry.

Firefighters were scrambled a dirt road in the Fosie industrial area in Malmö on Sunday.

Investigators believe the victims rented a car at Copenhagen Kastrup airport before they crossed the border to Sweden.

They are understood to have been shot before the car was set alight, local media reports.

Detectives say they “have an idea of who they are” but are not yet releasing names.

The burned out Danish-registered black Toyota Rav 4 is key to the investigation. Forensic experts are examining the bodies.

Rickard Lundqvist, press spokesperson for police region South in Sweden, said no suspects have been identified.

Police confirmed they are working with foreign police forces on the case.

The victims were last seen travelling past the Öresund Bridge toll station on Sunday afternoon.

Police are appealing for anyone saw the black Toyota between 11.30am and 2pm on Sunday July 14 to contact them.

Authorities refused to say whether the apparent attack was connected to gang violence.

Kerstin Gossé, spokesperson for the Swedish Police Authority, said: “We have to keep everything open. It is nothing that I can speculate on this early in the investigation.

“So far, we are keeping tight and restrained so that the preliminary investigation can have its way.”
