Authorities identified a Penngrove motorcyclist who was killed late last week in a head-on crash near the Marin County coast.

Steven Michael Campanali, 57, was riding a Kawasaki Ninja 650 about 6:17 p.m. Friday and traveling north at a ”high rate of speed” in the 25000 block of Highway 1 when the motorcycle went into the opposite lane and crashed into the front of a southbound GMC dual axle pickup truck, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office said in a Tuesday news release.

Campanali was knocked off his bike and landed in the highway, a little over a mile south of Tomales.

Medical personnel found Campanali unresponsive and in cardiopulmonary arrest. He was pronounced dead 6:30 p.m. at the site.

Campanali was identified Tuesday morning by the Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division.

The driver of the pickup truck was not injured.

A portion of Highway 1 was closed for about two hours as officials investigated and the two vehicles were towed, California Highway Patrol Officer Alex Ochoa said.

The agency will perform an autopsy, including a routine toxicology test, later this week on Campanali to determine his cause and manner of death.

The CHP-Marin is investigating the crash.
