COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF) – Crews are out across the CSRA Tuesday cleaning up after last night’s severe thunderstorms.

According to a spokesperson for Columbia County government, they have received multiple reports of downed trees following Monday night’s storm cell that was particularly damaging in and around the Appling area.

According to the National Weather Service regional office out of Columbia, SC, they are “very confident that this was a microburst,” because “radar did not indicate rotation, nor did the ambient environment favor tornadoes.”

According to the NWS Columbia Office, “the storm was a single cell when it produced the downburst, ruling out any possibility of rogue outflow boundaries forming a weak tornado,” though the meteorologists there said it was “an impressive storm” and worthy of the severe thunderstorm warning issued before the microburst dropped.

Following the storm, Columbia County has had crews last night and this morning from Road and Bridges responding to requests to have trees and limbs removed from Cobbham Road, Ray Owens Road, Yelton Road, and other roadways in the Appling area.

As the afternoon approaches, they are finishing up work to get downed trees and limbs from the right of way in those areas.

The NWS Columbia Office states that they are “very confident that this was a microburst,” and they state that the “radar did not indicate rotation, nor did the ambient environment favor tornadoes. The storm was a single cell when it produced the downburst, ruling out any possibility of rogue outflow boundaries forming a weak tornado. It was certainly an impressive storm and was worthy of the severe thunderstorm warning that we had in effect before the microburst dropped.”
