“If You Fugg It Up, You’re Absolute Toast” – Parker McCollum Says He’s Passed On Every Offer To Sing The National Anthem

Truer words have never been spoken. Most musicians know that the National Anthem isn't exactly one of the easiest songs to sing, and that's why many never do it... but also, is it worth the risk? Of course, not everyone has the vocal talent or ability to produce an all-time great rendition like Chris Stapleton did at Super Bowl 57, but most professional artists can at least get by without completely obliterating it, too. But after Ingrid Andress' viral, really
bad national anthem performance at the Home Run Derby last night, it once again proves just how poorly it can go: And of course, artists all have different styles and strengths in terms of the way they sing, and what they're capable of singing, but Andress has received an overwhelmingly negative response online and I honestly feel bad for the girl (not say it was a good performance, but still... I have a heart). This morning, tons of sports shows have obviously been covering it, and Pat McAfee and the boys opened the show by battling through it, saying they should've gotten someone like
Parker McCollum or The King George Strait to sing it instead. Would also make sense given the fact that the MLB All-Star Game and the Home Run Derby are in Arlington, Texas, this year. Parker responded to the video they tweeted out, saying that he's never accepted and offer to sing the The Star-Spangled Banner , because of the treacherous nature of what happens when it doesn't go well, à la what happened last night: "The national anthem is a tough one boys. You nail it and you get a pat on the back. If you fugg it up, you’re absolute toast. I like to think I’m as patriotic as anyone’s ever been, I bleed red white and blue. But I’ve passed on every opportunity to sing the anthem. Super high risk very low reward."
Honestly, after seeing how so many otherwise talented artists completely butcher it and live in infamy as "the worst" anthem singers of all-time, I don't blame him one bit and I think he's completely right... if you sign yourself up to sing the National Anthem, you better come ready to dazzle the country or never live down a horrific performance:
