A weather system that has already dropped up to 5 inches of rain across the region will be hanging around throughout the afternoon and into the evening.

The National Weather Service office in St. Louis says rain to continue all day and into the night for most of the metro east and surrounding areas.

Excluding the cities farthest east in southwest Illinois, the rain is expected to clear up overnight, with small chances for rain and thunderstorms remaining by morning.

Flash flood warnings remain in effect for St. Clair County, Monroe County, Randolph County, Washington County, Bond County, Clinton County, Jefferson County and Marion County. There’s also a flood watch in almost every county in Southern Illinois and counties surrounding St. Louis.

The rain is forecast to clear on Wednesday and remain clear for the rest of the week, though rain has been forecast to possibly start again on this upcoming Sunday and Monday, according to the weather service.
