Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) said the teleprompter malfunctioned during his speech at the Republican National Convention , causing the senator to ditch his new speech focused on “unity” and deliver the old one attacking Democratic policies.

In the wake of the attempted assassination against former President Donald Trump , Trump told the Washington Examiner that he was going to reframe his speech to focus on “unity.” Johnson said he did the same, but he was unable to deliver it because the teleprompter put up his speech written before the assassination attempt.

Johnson delivered a speech in which he said Democratic policies were "a clear and present danger to America, to our institutions, our values and our people” and that Democrats push a "fringe agenda" that forgets America's families and abandons the middle class.

His team said he read the old version of his speech because the teleprompter he read from put up the old speech instead of the new one.

“They literally loaded the wrong speech [on the teleprompter],” Johnson told PBS News. “I had taken that out. Instead I’d loaded about that we needed a somber moment in history. We should heed President Trump’s call to unite.”

“We must heal and unify this nation. I didn’t know how to take that out without screwing up the teleprompter,” the senator said.

Johnson, Wisconsin ’s senior senator, started the RNC with his four-minute speech. He also said, “Vice President Harris and President Biden have made our lives less safe and more expensive.”

He later provided PBS with a copy of the new speech that he was supposed to read.

Johnson's new speech also talked about the Democrats’ “fringe agenda,” but it stopped short of calling Democratic policies a “clear and present danger,” as the speech he delivered did.
