Thousands still without power in the Southern Tier

Update (7/17 8:03 p.m.): Thousands of NYSEG customers got their power back over the course of the day on Wednesday, but many are going into night three of having no power.

According to the NYSEG outage list, 732 customers in Chemung County, 788 in Schuyler County, and 1,786 in Steuben County don’t have power as of about 8 p.m. on July 17. NYSEG still estimates that power will be back in most of the Southern Tier, but this is subject to change.

A handful of outages on the company’s outage map don’t have an estimate of when they’ll end.

Update (7/17 8:52 a.m.): Much of the Southern Tier has regained power after severe storms left thousands in the dark for several days, however, some are still in the dark Wednesday morning.

According to the NYSEG outage list, 4,362 customers are without power in Chemung County, 1,511 customers in Schuyler County are without power, and 4,238 customers in Steuben County are without power on Wednesday, July 17.

For much of the Southern Tier, NYSEG has 2 p.m. on July 18 for the latest outages to be restored. The time is not concrete and is subject to change.

Update (7/16 8:26 p.m.): Power is back for some Southern Tier residents, but more than 17,000 NYSEG customers still don’t have power a day after severe storms swept through the region.

According to the NYSEG outage list, 7,815 customers in Chemung County, 2,922 in Schuyler County, and 7,148 in Steuben County were without power as of 8:25 p.m. on Tuesday.

Update (7/16 4:09 p.m.): More residents are without power this afternoon according to the NYSEG power outage list.

Since earlier this afternoon, numbers have gone up to 11,976 without power in Chemung County and 10,917 without power in Steuben County.

Schuyler County residents have seen a decrease in power outages with 3,359 without power.

Update (7/16 2:46 p.m.): At this time, the NYSEG power outage list shows that the number of customers without power has changed.

In Chemung and Schuyler counties, power outage numbers have gone down, leaving 10,796 people in Chemung County without power and 3,663 people in Schuyler County without power.

As storms began to pick back up this afternoon, Steuben County residents saw an increase in power outages, leaving 10,052 customers without power at this time.

ELMIRA, N.Y. ( WETM ) – Thousands are still without power in the Southern Tier due to the severe Monday evening storms.

According to the NYSEG power outage list , 11,143 customers in Chemung County are without power, 3,901 customers are without power in Schuyler County and 8,498 are without power in Steuben County.

In a livestream on his Facebook page, Chemung County Executive Chris Moss announced that most areas of power in Chemung County are estimated to be restored by 10 p.m. Additionally, some regions of Chemung County could be without power for days. NYSEG has been seen in Elmira working to replace the poles in the area damaged last night in the storms.

To help aid residents in the area without power, cooling stations, as well as water and ice distribution sites, have been put in place in different areas of the Twin Tiers. A full list of these locations can be found here .
