    Hazard tree assistance available for landowners on Hermits Peak Calf Canyon burn scar

    NEW MEXICO (KRQE) –The New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department is offering hazard tree assistance for trees that could damage structures, powerlines or roads on private land within the Hermit’s Peak Calf Canyon Fire area.

    New Mexico offering grants for projects celebrating the Route 66 Centennial

    Trees damaged by the fire are at greater risk of falling and causing damage to roads, structures, powerlines and other infrastructure. The Forestry Division is accepting requests to hazardous tree mitigation and will hire contractors for assistance with the projects.

    Criteria to be eligible includes:

    • Property must be located on Hermits Peak Calf Canyon burn scar
    • Trees must be on property within two tree heights of roads, powerlines and structures
    • Hazard trees include disaster damaged trees that are leaning more than 30 degrees, 50% canopy damage, split trucks, 40% exposed roots
