Vertical has shared the official trailer for its upcoming music drama titled, Girl You Know It’s True, starring Tijan Njie and Elan Ben Ali as disgraced pop duo Milli Vanilli. This comes after Vertical had successfully acquired the North American distribution rights to the movie, following its screening at the 2024 Berlin & Beyond Film Festival.

“We are excited to release this film that delves into the true story behind the success and controversy surrounding Milli Vanilli’s legacy,” said SVP of acquisitions Tony Piantedosi. “Simon has created a remarkable story with the collaboration of people who lived through the ordeal. It is a rare treat to pull back the curtain and show audiences the real story behind the shocking headlines.”

When is the Girl You Know It’s True release date?

Girl You Know It’s True is scheduled to make its debut on August 9, 2024 in theaters and on digital. It is written and directed by Simon Verhoeven. The film also stars Matthias Schweighofer, Graham Rogers, and Bella Dayne. It is produced by Quirin Berg, Max Wiedemann, Kristin Winkler, and Fab Morvan, with Verhoeven Kevin Liles, Frank Farian and Stefan Gärtner executive producing. Associate producers are Jasmin Davis, Carmen Pilatus, Todd Headlee, and Ingrid Segieth aka Milli.

“It is centered around the true story of the notorious scandal involving dancers Robert Pilatus’ (Njie) and Fabrice Morvan’s (Ali) rise to fame in the late 1980s as Milli Vanilli,” reads the synopsis. “Orchestrated by music producer Frank Farian, they became global stars with three No. 1 hits in the U.S.. But only a small circle of insiders know that the duo was not actually singing but rather lip-syncing to the voices of two other artists. At the height of their fame, Milli Vanilli won a Grammy Award, but the situation behind the scenes escalated, and the pressure on Rob and Fab grew. When the truth is revealed, they found themselves engulfed in one of the biggest scandals in music history.”
