Receiver Tahj Washington, the Dolphins’ seventh-round pick and a standout college player at Southern California, is out indefinitely after sustaining an undisclosed injury during an offseason team practice, according to a source.

The Dolphins placed Washington on the active/physically unable to perform list on Tuesday, the day that Dolphins rookies reported to training camp.

With the Dolphins’ wide receiver room already crowded, Miami would have the option of stashing Washington on injured reserve this season.

He already faced an uphill climb to make the team barring injuries to others.

Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and Odell Beckham Jr. will be on the team, while Braxton Berrios very likely will make the roster.

That would leave River Cracraft, sixth-round receiver Malik Washington and former fourth-rounder Erik Ezukanma among those competing for perhaps two open jobs at wide receiver, if the Dolphins keep six.

Tahj Washington’s average yards per catch last season (18.0) led the Pacific-12, and he finished the year with 59 catches for 1,062 yards and eight touchdowns.

He caught 43 passes for 743 yards (17.3 per catch) and six touchdowns for Memphis in 2020, then caught 54, 50 and 59 passes in three years at Southern California. His three-year numbers at USC: 2,449 receiving yards, 15.0 yards per catch and 15 touchdowns.

    Washington’s four-year, $4.1 million contract includes only $90,396 guaranteed, according to overthecap.com.

Also Tuesday, the Dolphins placed undrafted TCU rookie safety Mark Perry on the active/non-football injury list. The team did not elaborate on his injury or how it was sustained.

After playing his first three seasons at Colorado, Perry had 142 tackles over the past two seasons and was named honorable mention All-Big 12 in 2023 after starting 12 games for the Horned Frogs.

He had 15.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, those three interceptions (all coming in 2021 with the Buffaloes) and 10 passes defended over five college seasons. The Dolphins gave him $165,000 guaranteed, according to a source.

Perry faces an uphill climb in a battle for a backup safety job behind Jevon Holland, Jordan Poyer and Marcus Maye. Nik Needham and Elijah Campbell are among others competing at safety, with Needham also available at cornerback.
