Broadway Box Office: ‘The Outsiders’ Keeps Climbing Post-Tony Awards

The Outsiders box office continued to climb in the aftermath of Tony Awards, with the musical bringing in $1.4 million for the week ended July 14.

This is the fourth week in a row that the musical, which won the Tony for best musical on June 16, has broken the house record at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. Capacity for the show, which is based on the young adult novel by S.E. Hinton, has remained around 100 percent or above since the start of previews in March.

With the July 7 closing of Merrily We Roll Along, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez, total Broadway grosses across the industry dropped by 7 percent. The musical had been one of the top grossing in the industry, particularly toward the end of its run, with $2.77 million brought in during its final week.

However, several shows saw a boost in their grosses week-over-week, as they emerged from the holiday week surrounding July 4, which typically sees decreased attendance. Those included best play winner, Stereophonic , which saw its grosses increase to $983,845, and best musical contender, Suffs , $826,096. Both were an improvement over the prior week but still below the post-Tony week highs.

Without Merrily , the grossing shows for the week continued to be the stalwarts, Hamilton, with $1.9 million, Wicked , with $2.1 million, and The Lion King, which made $2.5 million across nine performances last week, rather than the typical eight.

Several shows have shifted their schedules going into the summer, with Illinoise now playing eight performances per week, rather than seven, and seeing grosses increase close to $50,000. Following the Tony Awards, C abaret, now sees stars Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin each performing seven out of the eight shows per week. Cabaret grosses were $1.61 million for the week ended July 14, compared to about $1.8 million in the weeks before the Tony Awards, with Redmayne and Rankin performing all shows.
