With all the discourse this offseason about the Buffalo Bills wide receiver room in the post-Stefon Diggs era, those conversations could be put to bed with one move.

The subject of many offseason discussions, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has finally, officially, requested a trade with a lack of progress on contract extension talks . First on the list of general managers that should be picking up the phone is Bills GM Brandon Beane, who could add a star wide receiver to pair with Josh Allen.

And yes, Aiyuk is absolutely a star wide receiver.

Brandon Aiyuk Is A Star Wide Receiver On The Rise

Since 2022, Aiyuk ranks 11th in the NFL with 2,357 receiving yards. Of the top-10 in receiving yards over that timeframe, his 15.4 yards per reception ranks second behind only Amari Cooper.

Aiyuk has gotten better every year since being drafted in the first round of of the 2020 NFL Draft. Last year, he was 7th in the NFL with 1,342 receiving yards despite only seeing 105 targets. For perspective, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill led the league in receiving yards with 1,799, but did so on 171 looks.

That boils down to 12.78 receiving yards per target for Aiyuk, and 10.52 receiving yards per target for Hill.

Aiyuk is a special route runner with good athleticism and size at 6'0" 200 lbs. who does a ton of work after the catch – his 17.9 YAC last season was second in the NFL. He is arguably the most underrated star receiver in the NFL.

Would The 49ers Trade Brandon Aiyuk?

John Lynch, GM of the 49ers, has been firm in his stance all offseason that Aiyuk isn't being traded, but what front offices say isn't always what they do.

If Lynch and the 49ers front office believed they would be holding on to Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel for the long haul, then perhaps they wouldn't have been so keen to spend a first round draft pick on wide receiver Ricky Pearsall out of Florida.

The timing on this is certainly key – Aiyuk is formally requesting a trade with one week until veterans are required to report to training camp, which creates a tentative deadline for a move.

Brandon Aiyuk Trade Would Be Huge For Josh Allen

The Bills spent their first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on wide receiver Keon Coleman , a 6'3" true perimeter/boundary guy that can go up and get the ball above the rim, but there's no denying that the talent and route running ability of Aiyuk would provide a massive boost to a wide receiver room with a ton of questions.

Aiyuk would slide in as the immediate, de facto number one option for Allen, allowing Coleman time to progress and adjust to the NFL. After those two on the depth chart would be veteran and new-acquisition Curtis Samuel, along with emerging asset Khalil Shakir, who looked promising late in the season.

A trade for Aiyuk would signal that Beane isn't looking at any sort of retooling process, and instead would tell Bills fans everywhere that he is all in on a Super Bowl run.
