Living with a deaf and blind dog may seem like a huge undertaking, and don't get it twisted, it is. There are a lot of adjustments you'll need to make in most aspects of your life, but they're worth it. There are so many beautiful parts, too!

For example, take a look at this video from Sunday, July 14th. One sweet deaf and blind dog is famous for causing a ton of problems, but at the same time, he's also just the nicest, most easily excited guy around:

Morty, Echo, Winston, and Frank are quite the pack. Things are exciting and fun around that house, but of course, they can be hard. It's worth it; they're too funny together!

The dog that's doing the crazy dance in this video is Morty. He's the most notorious of the bunch, even though the account is actually named after his deaf and visually impaired sister, Echo. He's gone viral a few times before:

    1. When his siblings were trying to "test" his blindness.
    2. When his parents compiled all the times he tried to "look out the window."

He's also the most easily excited of the four pups; it doesn't matter what the situation is. If he feels excited, he'll start going crazy, even if the situation doesn't really call for it. He and his sister are both completely deaf, though she's only visually impaired, not fully blind.

It comes from the fact that the two of them were bred with the "Double Merle" gene. Merle dogs have gorgeous spotted coats , and having one copy of the Merle gene poses no risks to the pup. However, when two Merle carriers are bred together, it results in an increased chance for puppies to be born deaf/blind with a host of other health issues. It's almost always attributed directly to irresponsible breeding.

How do Deaf and Blind Dogs Know Where People Are?

Morty's mom and dad have just walked in, and he obviously seems to know that they're home, even though he can't see them. No, he's not faking being deaf and blind - there are plenty of ways for dogs like Morty to navigate the world. For example:

    1. There will be vibrations as they walk in, open and shut the door, etc.,.
    2. New smells will fill the air.
    3. If the dog is close enough to the door, they may be able to feel the breeze.

Dogs have incredibly strong senses of smell, so even if they lose their hearing or sight, they can still navigate the world pretty well. They can track you with your scent, and they eventually start to learn where things are - it's why they don't constantly bump into things. Everything just takes a little getting used to!
