Mange is something no dog parent ever wants to have to deal with, but it does end up happening sometimes. Once mange starts to impact a dog, the most important thing is getting rid of it and rehabilitating them as swiftly as possible.

On Monday, July 15th, one Bully who was rescued and having a nasty battle with mange was officially starting to come out on top. Her transformation from itchy and in trouble to stubbly and sweet is already amazing, and she's not even close to finished yet:

Glorias skin/coat transformation in just 3 weeks time is absoutely incredible!! This is why foster homes are so important. I hope her story encourages many others to give it a try! We are no longer accepting new applications for Glo since she has so many interested potential adopters. Our rescue is overwhelmed with interest and we know we will find her the best home! In the meantime, there are so many other Glo’s that need our help, reach out to your local rescues to volunteer! #fosteringsaveslives #bullybreeds #fosterdog #youglogirl #rescuedogs

Wally the Pit has been such a good brother to his foster sister, Gloria. She's really needed his help, and he has never hesitated to give it to her!

Gloria was rescued in late June, picked up as a stray and brought into a North Carolina animal rescue. There was a lot to unpack with this pup: for one, she's itty bitty. Her foster mom (and the rescue, for that matter) thought she was just a baby, but as it turns out, she's actually at least a year old. She may be small because of bad breeding, though malnutrition is another possible cause.

She was found with severe Demodectic mange, which was the biggest concern when they were developing a treatment plan. She's been having frequent medicated baths (which she also went viral for), and that combined with a good diet and lots of rest has her looking a thousand times better!

Now, for the best part of Glo's story: they recently had to shut down intake for adoption applications for her, she has so many people interested! No matter what, this sweet girl and internet starlet will be in good hands forever!

Demodectic Mange vs. Sarcoptic Mange in Dogs

When diagnosing a dog with mange, differentiating between the types is important. The treatment depends on the type of mange your dog is suffering from.

Demodectic mange is caused by an overpopulation of Demodex mites and typically occurs because the dog has a compromised immune system. Bad breeding, malnutrition, and stress can all contribute. Sarcoptic mange is caused by an influx of Sarcoptes mites and occur when a dog has contact with another infected animal.

Both types of mange are bad and should be treated as quickly as possible. If left untreated, mange can cause permanent damage to the skin, coat, and leave scars and crusty, infected sores. There are other types of mange as well, caused by other types of mites, but they usually look the same to the untrained eye. Getting a vet to figure out exactly what your dog has is the first step to getting them better. Go Glo!
