It's hard to imagine that while some areas of the country are completely underwater, others are facing droughts after going too long without any rain, but that's exactly the place we find ourselves in this July, as many home gardeners wonder exactly how they're supposed to keep their gardens growing when facing so many different extremes.

Fortunately, one pro gardener decided to break down the science of watering a garden for her followers on TikTok, explaining what you really need to consider when you're trying to determine if it's time to water your plants under the heat of the July sun.

Take a look at the video below and then take some notes because you're going to need them!

Go to my bio to join the Start Your Fall Garden Workshop, where I’ll be sharing my top tips for a thriving garden, from watering techniques to maximizing productivity! The answer to how often to water your garden this summer? It depends! Not just on the heat and the rainfall but mostly on the evaporation rate. The question isn't how much water your garden receives but how much it can retain. You can get an idea on the evaporation rate by checking the moisture level of your soil 12 hours and 24 hours after watering. If it's still moist after 24 hours, you can wait a day or two to water again. If it's drying out within 24 hours, you'll need to water every day during this month. If it's drying out in just a few hours, you may need to water twice a day. This month is a good time to think about water saving measures like planting your garden more full so that the soil can conserve more of its moisture. That's what we'll be talking about in the upcoming Fall Garden Workshop. You don't want to miss it- Just go to my bio to get the invite! #garden #watering #summer #july #gardening #plants

As you can see from the detailed explanation in @gardenary's video, it's not so much about how often you're watering your garden but more about how your garden is handling the water it's receiving, both from you and from Mother Nature.

She calls this the evaporation rate and says that home gardeners will need to watch this to determine how and when they will need to water again. For example, she says that if you water your garden and check it after 12 hours and 24 hours. Depending on to moisture levels at those times, you'll know whether or not you can go days between waterings or just hours.

This actually makes such complete sense to us, and we can't believe we never figured this out before in all of our years of gardening!

That being said, if your garden's soil is drying up quickly during the day and you need to water more often than you already are, you may want to figure out how to set up some sort of automated irrigation system to help yourself out.

Make Your Own DIY Irrigation System

If you're a little bit handy, you may even be able to come up with your own method of watering your plants automatically, like how this woman did. She used some basic supplies like wood stakes, a cotton swab, and an old plastic bottle to create the perfect drip irrigation system .

And while this may be a little harder to pull off outside (we'd worry that the elements would cause the cotton swab to rot or disintegrate, quickly causing the bottle to empty) it really does illustrate how easy the process can be!

Determine How Much Water Your Plants Need

Sometimes it's easy to know when your plants are thirsty because you can see them starting to wilt, but if you want to prevent that from happening and ensure that they always have everything they'll need to survive!
