Famed Gopher baseball coach Dick Siebert will conduct a baseball school for boots in the Grand Rapids area at Legion field on Friday, July 24.

Siebert will be assisted by Tom Warner, athletic director and baseball coach at St. Paul Cretin High School, and Hal Younghans, assistant principal at Minneapolis Edison and former baseball hockey coach at Patrick Henry.

Youngsters in nearby communities are urged to attend the school in the town nearest them.

All boys, 9-18 years old may take part in the school designed to increase baseball knowledge and enhance playing ability of participating boys. Youngsters wishing to take part should report at the time specified for their respective age brackets: 9-12 a.m. for boys 9-12 years old and 1-4 p.m. for boys 13 and over.

There will be no entry fee. Balls and bats will be provided but boys are asked to bring their own gloves. 1994

July 17, 1994: “Rapids soccer teams compete”

The U14 boys and girls from the Northwoods Soccer Association (NSA) traveled to Fridley Friendly Tournament recently. The boys combined their two teams and brought down about 16 boys who put in a marvelous showing for Grand rapids. The boys came in second in their division for the tournament.

The boys team started out with a tough game against Golden Valley and lost 2-0. But it must have just warmed them up for their second game against Prior Lake. They played one of their best games ever and won 2-1. Matt Bothma and Andrew Keller scored the goals for Grand Rapids.

On Sunday, the boys team faced a tough Fridley team but kept the score tied 1-1 for the majority of the game. Ryan Lahti had scored on a penalty kick but it wasn’t enough to prevent the 3-1 loss. All the players were in top form with exceptional performances from Andrea Threinen and Jonah Hietala.

The girls also combined their two teams but didn’t fare as well. They went down with only seven players total, but considering how they were outnumbered, did very well.

They played teams from Mankato, East St. Paul, and Woodbury. They had no wins for the weekend but did hold opponents’ goals to less than six and impressed many onlookers with good passing play. All seven girls showed great stamina with super performances by Sarah Krile, Libby Nelson, and Krista Ott. Katie Perrot shared goalkeeping with Lea Friesen and had some excellent saves. Most importantly, the girls had a lot of fun and enjoyed the experience.
