Footwear manufacturer Skechers USA has sued Freeport-based L.L.Bean in federal court over claims the Maine company copied part of the design of its shoes.

The suit, filed Monday in New York City, alleges that L.L.Bean’s Freeport shoe uses a “heel cup” design that resembles a common external heel design Skechers uses, and has a patent.

“These designs are unique and eye-catching because they use graceful, sweeping, gently rolling lines and slopes to create the ornamental appearance of the heel of the shoe and make it visually appealing,” according to Skechers’ court filing.

The California-based footwear maker is suing for unspecified damages, and for L.L.Bean to stop selling its Freeport shoes.

L.L.Bean did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Spectrum News.
