MEDORA, ND ( KXNET ) — Right now, a wild horse in western North Dakota is in ‘time-out’ after a park ranger said the animal wasn’t playing nicely with a group of trail riders.

Chris Kman with the group Chasing Horses Wild Horse Advocates says the incident happened two months ago when some trail riders were riding horses through Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

Kman says the male bachelor horse named ‘Alluvium’ took notice of some of the mares in the riding group and approached them. The woman was bucked off her horse.

But when questioned about it by a ranger, Kman says the woman told the ranger that Alluvium wasn’t a nuisance.

Not long after, Kman says park workers captured Alluvium and put him in a separate holding area.

“Especially like in the last two years, where there’s been such a public outcry over these horses and for the park to keep them, and it’s called into question the integrity of the park and the trustworthiness of the park, that if they would just release this horse it would go a long way in repairing some public relation relationships that people have with the park and the impression that we have,” said Kman.

“The park service must be open and transparent in terms of what they’re doing and engage the public so that North Dakotans know and have an opportunity to weigh in as to how that herd is managed so that it’s managed in the best way possible,” Senator Jon Hoeven said.

Kman now says over a thousand people have signed a petition seeking to pardon Alluvium and release him back into the park.
