UPPER MARLBORO, Md ( DC News Now ) – Prince George’s County Park Police has been around since the 1950s, and on Tuesday they swore in their new chief of police, Germaine Haywood.

Haywood has been with the department for 19 years working with various aspects of the department such as Patrol Services, Canine Unit and Investigative Services, to name a few.

The ceremony started with Haywood being introduced and him thanking his family as well as his comrades in the force.

Haywood named his children as one of his primary motivations, bringing them up with him as his wife pinned his badge on his chest.

“To have them there in that moment was special,” said Haywood. “Family is everything, it’s the reason why I put on the uniform.”

Haywood thanked the attendees and enjoyed the warm reception, but knew it would be right back to work soon. As chief, one of the biggest things he’s focusing on is the mental health of his officers.

“People forget that we are people,” he said. “They deal with trauma from the things that they handle deal with daily.”

The ceremony was held at Newton White Mansion.
