Golden State Warriors Sign Summer League Star

The Golden State Warriors have officially signed Guard Daeqwon Plowden to a two-way contract, his agent Drew Kelso announced Tuesday afternoon. Plowden has been terrific in his five games of the NBA Summer League the past couple of weeks. After going undrafted in the 2022 NBA draft, he has bounced around the NBA G-League the past few seasons.

Plowden is a 6' 6'' guard who has been shooting the lights out for the Summer League Warriors. For a Golden State Warriors team that is in a transition stage after losing Klay Thompson in free agency, they need as much perimeter shooting as they can find.

Plowden signing a two-way contract gives Golden State some flexibility. If he is playing well with the NBA club, they can sign him to a guaranteed NBA contract. If he struggles, they can have him figure it out with the G-League Santa Cruz Warriors while being able to move the NBA roster around.

How will Plowden fare this season with the Golden State Warriors?

    Daeqwon Plowden’s Journey

Daeqwon Plowden played high school ball at Mastery Charter North School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. From there, he signed to play college basketball at Bowling Green University. Plowden spent five seasons at Bowling Green from 2017-2022. For his career at Bowling Green, he averaged 10.5 points and 6.1 rebounds. His best season was his last in 2021-22, where he averaged 15.7 points per game.

Since leaving Bowling Green, Plowden went undrafted in the 2022 NBA draft and has signed G-League contracts with the New Orleans Pelicans and Orlando Magic. Last season for the Magic’s G-League team, Plowden averaged 11.9 points per game.

Plowden Gives Warriors More Options At Shooting Guard

Daeqwon Plowden has been a pleasant surprise if you are the Warriors. You never know what to expect from summer league so it is exciting to see Plowden get a contract where he will play with the big club. He will get his number called at some point as Golden State looks to find depth at shooting guard.

The Golden State Warriors had all-star Klay Thompson at shooting guard since 2011. He is a franchise legend and one of the greatest shooters to walk the earth. Replacing him is going to be a very difficult task. Losing Thompson to play for the Dallas Mavericks this offseason was a gut punch.

The Warriors have been addressing this throughout free agency. They have signed guards Buddy Hield and De’Anthony Melton. Hield and Melton are both coming off seasons where they averaged double-digit points per game. We’ll see how each of these guys complements Steph Curry and Brandin Podziemski. The team lost in the first game of the NBA Play-In Tournament last season.

    Summer League Warriors 5-0

The Golden State Warriors summer league team has been dominant through their first five contests. They swept the California Classic last week, going 3-0, and have picked up right where they left off. They beat the Suns and Bulls in Las Vegas over the weekend.

Aside from Plowden, Podziemski, and Jackson-Davis, the Dubs have been getting big contributions from Ethan Thompson, Kevin Knox, and Jackson Rowe. With Daeqwon Plowden securing a two-way contract, it wouldn’t be surprising at all if another Summer Dub earned their way to a contract by the time summer league is over.

The Warriors hit the hardwood again on Friday against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
