Power is out Tuesday night in sections of Edison following a severe storm that passed through parts of both Edison and Metuchen.

Edison Mayor Sam Joshi said PSE&G was on the way to impacted areas.

Metuchen Mayor Jonathan Busch said the storm has caused some damage.

"Initial reports suggest multiple trees and branches down at various places around the borough. Emergency officials are in the process of assessing the damage," Busch said in a Facebook post.

Shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday heavy rain and winds passed through the area, knocking branches and power lines into the street, and overturning lawn furniture.

The storm also impacted areas of Woodbridge and Monroe.

The PSE&G map shows about 5,439 customers without power, including small clusters of customers in the area of Plainfield Avenue and Aylin Street in Metuchen, and the James Monroe School neighborhood off Grandview Avenue in Edison, known as the Heights. The map indicates power is not scheduled to be restored until early Wednesday.

Edison Township sent out a message that due to the weather the fire and public works departments are out at the Heights in the area of Menlo Park Mall to Grandview Avenue.
